Anything and Everything you need to know about Born Guitars

Carving wooden guitar frame

At Born we treat each customer with the upmost respect and attention, and we build every single guitar as if it was for ourselves.  We take great care each step in the process to ensure your guitar is excellent and to your specifications.

Here's is an example below of the typical process we use for designing and building with Born Guitars®. Every customer has different needs so these steps are flexible:

1. Phone Call &/or email about initial ideas and design direction

2. Key elements of the design determined including Body Shape, Bridge Style, Headstock, and general ideas on finish, pickups and wood choices

3. Wood species selected and wood options pulled from inventory

4. Wood choices finalized (Customer &/or Master Luthier pick from the best options)

5. Design is finalized with CAD (Computer Aided Design) and customer approves the final look, including custom control layouts, custom inlays and orientation of unique wood tops.  Final details regarding neck shape and dimensions are also noted in the customer's specifications

6. Custom finish samples are provided to the customer for final approval of look and color. Any special parts are ordered at this time.

7. Neck and Body are made from scratch to the customer's specifications using the specific woods selected for their guitar.  CNC Technology is used to precisely machine each part to within 0.001 of an inch.

8. Guitar Body is Finish sanded and goes to finish.  If you wish we will start providing teaser photos of your guitars progress.

9. Neck is hand shaped to final specifications, and the fretboard and frets are finished to the best standards in the industry.  Each neck is hand checked for excellent feel and playability.

10. Guitar is assembled, setup, and evaluated to ensure every detail is just right. Your guitar is ready, sound and looks great! Let's celebrate a new Born Guitar® legend!

Absolutely!

We will design and inlay nearly anything into your fretboard and even your guitar.

The only restrictions are:

  1. Is it possible and does it fit on the guitar?
  2. Is the design convertible into an inlay? Too small? Too complex for inlay?
  3. ‘It costs what?!’

Custom inlay can range in price from a couple hundred dollars for something relatively simple to thousands of dollars for the most complex designs.

Cost depends on:

  1. Complexity of Design
  2. The amount of Design Work required (Ex. Sketches, Revisions, Final Design Layout)
  3. Materials used

Yes, we will create custom stains, bursts, colors and finishes just for your Born electric guitar. Keep in mind that one-off custom work and designs cost money, and to make a custom color or finish look its best requires significant amounts of labor and testing.  Your new guitar should look amazing and just the way you want it, and to do things right just takes a little more love.

Yes! You have all the same choices as righties. Left handed guitars cost $150 extra to cover special design and manufacturing adjustments required in the building process.
We are committed to maintaining a responsible and sustainable approach to guitar building, and therefore, we do not use any wood species that we cannot source in a responsible sustainable manner. We insist that all of our wood suppliers can tell us exactly were our wood was sourced from and that is was sourced legally and responsibly. To view our entire wood collection, visit our woods page.
Contact us and share your ideas. While we can’t promise that we’ll be able to accommodate every request, we’ll certainly try our hardest!  We often make special orders for parts and even wood for custom orders.

We realize making a decision can be difficult with so many options to choose from, and that is why we are here to help.

After going through our simple process your dream guitar will be coming into perfect focus.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Do you want your guitar to specialize in a certain style or sound Or Do you want a Jack-of-all-trades? Think about what your new guitar will sound like.
  2. Choose a body style based on the look you want – We have 4 main body styles (OG Drop, OG Carve, MG Drop, MG Carve)
  3. Pick your Color(s) – Do you want a fancy figured wood? A solid color? A burst?

Once you have answered these questions our master luthier will guide you through the rest including the best tonewoods to achieve your signature look and sound.

We can essentially create any shape neck you want with the ability to nearly match your favorite neck shape.  We offer ‘C’ ‘D’ ‘V’ and Asymmetrical shapes in many thicknesses.

Our classic and LTD models come with standard ‘C’ ‘D’ or our proprietary ‘C/D’ shape that feels nice, round and comfortable near the nut and then progresses into a flatter back towards the 12th fret and beyond for excellent feel and speed.

Custom favorites include our Asymmetrical ‘V’ and ‘D’ shapes, and classic style ‘C’ & modern ‘D’ shapes.
